Time To Teach

As the weeks went by I was able to sit back and watch groups introduce their lesson to the sixth grade science class we were working with. It was a great opportunity to see how each groups performed their lessons and worked with one another throughout the lesson to teach the children something knew. I was able to see how each individal person had a way of teaching, along with each individual group. There were many hands on activities and interesting information taught to the children, which helped them engage with one another. Finally, it was our our turn to go. After preparing our lesson it was our turn to teach the class about Plate Tectonics. My favorite part about teaching and working with the children is when we get to do hands on activities with each of them. Not only does it make learning fun, it is a good visual way of learning. Being able to see something right in front of your eyes and create something on your own gives the individual a little more interest in what may be going on. I was always one to love doing hands on activities in the classroom. Having different stations set up allowed the students to move from one station to the next and create all different hypothesis's and try to prove it along the way. Once you are up in front of the class what you are about to teach seems to come naturally. It is important while working with students to be confident and ready for any questions they may throw at you. I thought i was going to be very nervous when it came to being up in front of the whole class for the first time but when its something you love to do it it comes naturally and you have fun with it. Being able to work with sixth graders has given me a much different feel, being that most of my fieldwork has been with younger children. Working with sixth graders you always need to be ready for different types of questions, sometimes they can become loud and rowdy. It is important to always stay calm and quiet the class down before you move on to something else. I cannot wait until i have my own classroom and i am able to teach one day. Teaching lessons is always one step closer.
